The San Francisco plastic bag ban is causing other cities to think about what they are going to do about their own plastic bag problems. There is a need to ban Plastic bags on an urgent basis but at the same time there is also a need to find an alternative/answer to Plastic bags which are handy, strong, easy to mass produce, and very very cheap, to make any ban acceptable in a Third World Country like ours.

Unless the current plastic bags in the Indian market are replaced by cheap, degradable plastic bags or paper bags followed by ban on production of Plastic bags by law I do not see this going out of circulation. However I do see a small effort by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in the right direction by banning the use of Plastic bags below 20 microns by Vendors and shops. I call this as a small effort since the Govenment has done nothing to stop the producers of Plastic bags instead it is wielding the stick on the users.

The Government of Maharashtra announced Ban of Plastic bags from the State altogether in the Year 2005. Offenders were to be fined Rs. 1000/- applicable for citizens and Rs. 5000/- for Traders. Results are still awaited.

I would like to post a link below which informs us about the efforts made by a Car Manufacturer to produce environment friendly Cars.

Plastic is a threat to the environment, the challenge our world will soon be facing is how to get the tons of plastic disposed of as garbage, out of the system. We need an effort such as the one given in the above link, from manufacturers of products having plastic parts.

If there is one politician who can get his way it is Ken Livingstone. I am impressed that he is fighting for a ban on carrier bags in London, very impressed indeed. I have actually just finished writing a letter to him about the Uk Bring Your Own Bag campaign so hopefully he will lend his support.
